Know the Numbers that Can Save Your Life
Free heart health screenings offered as part of Heart Month
DAYTON, OHIO, February 3, 2010 – Premier Community Health, on behalf of Miami Valley Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, Atrium Medical Center and Upper Valley Medical Center, will provide free heart health screenings throughout February at locations all around the greater Dayton region.
“Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the nation’s number one cause of death,” said Pamela Reichel, executive director of Premier Community Health. “Getting screened and knowing your numbers can save your life.”
High blood pressure increases your chance of having a heart attack or stroke. Your blood pressure numbers are sometimes your only warning. Having your blood pressure checked regularly is important. In addition, high cholesterol is a major risk factor for heart disease. Lowering total cholesterol that is too high reduces the risk of heart disease and of having a heart attack, even if you already have heart disease. Your HDL, or good cholesterol, is the number you want to raise. An HDL of 60 or higher can actually give your some protection from heart disease. Keeping your cholesterol numbers in a good range is important for everyone.
In 2009, Premier Community Health provided heart health screenings to more than 13,000 people in the greater Dayton region. Screenings include total cholesterol, HDL (good cholesterol), blood pressure and blood sugar. All screenings are open to the public and no appointments or fasting are needed to attend.
